Clos du Mont Olivet, a reference in Chateuneuf du Pape.
Clos du Mont Olivet is a relatively unknown area of Chateauneuf du Pape. Created in 1932 by Seraphin Sabon and transfered to his eldest son Joseph, it is still managed as a family estate: Jean Claude and Pierre (Joseph's sons), now take care of the estate with their children Celine, David and Thierry.
The terroirs are magnificent, and the range is at the image of the winemakers: high quality and simplicity.
Le Petit Mont is a superb Chateauneuf which you can drink young, even if it has a great potential of ageing. It is a choice of the estate to keep this wine affordable, to make the know-how of the estate accessible (much like the second wines in Bordeaux).
Le Clos, however, is a powerful Chateauneuf du pape with a great potential of ageing. It takes a decade to appreciate its complexity. In the shadow of the biggest names, this great classic wine is still affordable. Let's hope it lasts !
Why should you buy Clos du Mont olivet wines?
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Jeb Dunnuck, oct. 2013) : One of my favorite estates and a bastion of traditionally made, age-worthy wines. This is an estate that is at the top of their game.
