Les vins de la Madone, perfect expression of volcanic Loire valley

madone-gilles-bonnefoy-loire-cotes-forezGilles Bonnefoy works at Vins de la Madone, Loire wines in the Cotes du Forez appellation (the southernmost appellation in Loire Valley). The reds come from Gamay, and the whites from Roussanne and Sauvignon. The estate has been biodynamic certified since 2009.
Located in Champdieu, the estate is established on a geological fault. Based on a soil of granite and basaltic rocks, it is a proud ambassador of the "volcanic Loire valley".
The estate was created in 1997. Gilles Bonnefoy began by renting out a few plots, then in 2001 he planted 4 hectares around the Volcan de la Madone. The construction of a superb cellar in 2004 really launched the estate. Today, the vineyard covers 11 hectares, and benefits from modern facilities. The age of the vines varies from 5 to 45 years and some vintages are already difficult to obtain!
Harvest is manual. In the cellar, everything happens as naturally as possible: no addition of sulphites in the juices before fermentation and a very limited contribution at the time of bottling. Gilles Bonnefoy practices plot vinification: each plot is harvested and vinified separately, then blended (or not) with others depending on the vintage and the vintage. The estate has been certified organic since 2001 and biodynamic (Demeter certification) since 2009.
At the tasting, these are mineral wines, which reflect the volcanic soil. A perfect expression of Gamay, all in velvety and finesse. The whites are just as remarkable, fresh, mineral and saline.
Very distinctive wines to discover!
