Thomas and Matisse Santamaria - Patrimonio - Corsica
The Santamaria Estate is a family vineyard located in the heart of the Island of Beauty. Founded six generations ago, it is now run by Thomas and Matisse Santamaria.
They took over from their father, Jean-Louis Santamaria, and continue to develop the wines with passion and innovation.
The two brothers cultivate their vines with deep respect for the environment, applying certified organic practices, thus preserving the authenticity of their unique terroir.
The vineyard covers 20 hectares of vines under the AOP Patrimonio and IGP Île de Beauté classifications, nestled on the schist soils of Olmetta in the southern part of the Patrimonio appellation. It is the only vineyard located on these specific soils, which give the wines a distinctive character. The vineyard features the most renowned Corsican grape varieties: vermentinu, niellucciu, elegante (known as grenache on the mainland), and a touch of muscat. A grafting project with sciacarellu, nicknamed the "Gamay of the Mediterranean," is also underway as part of their diversification and production enhancement efforts.
The niellucciu, an emblematic Corsican grape, produces powerful wines, often rustic, but in the hands of the Santamaria brothers, it reveals an elegance worthy of the finest Mediterranean wines. Meanwhile, the vermentinu stands out with its saline, fresh, and opulent wines, with a smooth texture typical of the great whites of the Patrimonio appellation.
