Great Chinon by Mathieu and Bernard Baudry

baudry-bernard-mathieu-loire
With Philippe Alliet, undoubtedly THE reference to Chinon, in the Valley of the Loire. Based on Cabernet Franc, a separate vintage for each terroir illustrates the richness of the great wines of Chinon.

Today backed by his son Mathieu, Bernard Baudry is now organic certified. It is in this state of mind that for a few years, the plantations (in Clos Guillot in particular) are made from ungrafted vines, "francs de pied" as they say. The range is declined over the terroirs, always with long farms to obtain silky and flattering wines, but always with this dense and tannic character of cabernet franc:

"Les Grezeaux" is not produced every year, and includes the "Domaine" when the wine is not representative enough of this terroir (clay and silica).

"Domaine", like the other small yields (less than 30 hl / ha in 2013), is a blend of 70% of the vines on the plateau and 30% of bass, the whole raised in truncated cones for 18 months.

"Clos Guillot" comes from an exceptional terroir of yellow limestones with prominent minerality. An "amateur wine", as its author calls it, to keep in the cellar a few years before tasting.

"La Croix Boissee", the great wine for aging of the estate, is almost accessible young - especially in 2012 - as it is flattering. Originating from 2 hectares of sandy limestone.

The production of the 28 hectares of red goes for a large part abroad (50% in the USA), where the reputation of the Baudry is even greater than in France. During our last visit in the summer of 2014 (ah, this Croix Boissée 2000, so young, opened exceptionally ... for our greatest happiness!), Besides the faithful friends of Mr. Baudry who passed by there Is very convivial!), We met texan amateurs who had come from Paris to meet the winemaker of their favorite wine.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Y. Castaing, Juin 2024). 92/100. Crafted from vines planted on clay and limestone soils, the 2022 Chinon Blanc reveals aromas of lemon, white flowers, pear and herbs, followed by a medium-bodied, seamless and round palate with a moderately concentrated core of fruit and a delicate tension in the mid-palate complemented by an...
