Alphonse Mellot, one of the best domains in Sancerre
Alphonse Mellot produces high-end Sancerre wines in the Loire Valley. The white wines are made from sauvignon blanc, and the reds from pinot noir. Alphonse Mellot is the only domain in Sancerre to receive the maximum rating of 5*/5 in the B+D 2020 guide.
For the Mellots, the name Alphonse reigns: like the vines, it is passed down from generation to generation. The records go back to 1513 and testify to the Mellot family, their wines, and their attachment to the Sancerre region for five centuries. The late 1980s marked a turning point in the history of the estate with the creation by Alphonse Mellot Senior of the Domaine de la Moussière. Today, Alphonse "Junior" (son of Alphonse Mellot), the 19th generation, and his daughter Emmanuelle are in charge. The Génération XIX cuvée is the symbol of this impressive family legacy.
The estate spans 30 hectares and is farmed using organic and biodynamic practices. Located on Kimmeridgian marls (like in Chablis), a terroir of clay, flint, and limestone, it is the only vineyard in Sancerre to earn the prestigious "out of competition" mention.
Great care is given to the vines: soil respect, low yields, manual harvesting. The winemaking is done "Burgundian-style" (similar to Vincent Pinard in Sancerre) which results in elegant and pure wines. The wines are aged in beautiful vaulted underground cellars, a place steeped in history, having witnessed nearly 20 generations of winemakers and hundreds of vintages.
The exceptional quality of this vineyard has greatly contributed to the worldwide fame of the estate.

Because we love them, and we believe these wines absolutely deserve a place in your cellar! But as some of our customers have said, "we’re not objective, as we’ve tasted and selected them to sell: we are interested." That's why we prefer to "defend" our selection with the comments from the winemaker and the major wine guides, more objective than we are:
