Domaine du Mortier, classic and aged in oak Vire-Clesse from Burgundy.
Renaud Chandioux is an authentic winemaker, feeling more comfortable in his cellar and vineyards than selling his wines. He owns 10 hectares of Chardonnay in Vire Clesse (a rising appellation in Maconnais, southern Burgundy).
Each year, he sells a big part of his wine unbottled to the same wine merchants, it is easier! Everyone knows that in Burgundy, some merchants "pay the price" for high-quality wines that allow them to raise the general level of other "neutral" purchases.
The winemaker may not be the best salesman, but when talking about technique, he is the man! Passion takes over when giving details on how to carry out the vineyard (sustainable agriculture) or describing winemaking methods (in separate vats to isolate the different plots in order to optimize future blends) ! And we discover a professional, meticulous winemaker, who leaves nothing to chance, and manages his domain impressivly seriously.
Renaud Chandioux admits that he learns a little more each year of his soil (he settled in 2000), and adapt better and better to the vagaries of each vintage. Wine is only better! But there is no way to produce the same wine each year: certainly the Chardonnay is there, but "we are not in Champagne", the wine will be "highlighting the specificities of the vintage".
