Les Vignes Oubliees, a beautiful story in Languedoc.
Les Vignes Oubliees estate is above all a beautiful human story.
Jean-Baptiste Granier, a grandson and son of winemakers, studied to become an agricultural engineer, and was then accepted as a trainee in 2007 by a figure from Languedoc: Olivier Jullien. Together, they discover the highland soil around the village of Saint-Privat, and the famous vines that they will baptize "oubliees"(meaning "forgotten"): indeed, these vines were doomed to abandon because the amount of work necessary to exploit them was not compatible with grapes brought to the cooperative. Now these vines produce very fine grapes. Some experimental winemaking later, having verified that this terroir was unique (schists, sandstone, clay-limestone of altitude) and that the quality of the wine was there, thus the capacity to vinify then to sell wines at their right price, Jean -Baptiste settles in Saint-Privat, in partnership with the different owners in place.
His first decision is to switch immediately to organic farming. The real winemaking cellars will arrive a few years later. Meanwhile, the wines of Les Vignes Oubliees (first vintage: 2009) will be "hosted" at the Mas Jullien ...
Les Vignes Oubliees estate is now composed of a few hectares of very old vines of ancestral selection, located at 300-400 m altitude, on the foothills of the Larzac. The 7th vintage produced, 2015, is probably the most successful. The scarcity of these unique wines is already known by Languedoc (and particularly Terrasses du Larzac) aficionados. Indeed, the recognition in 2014 of Terrasses du Larzac as an AOC is timely to devote several years of efforts and heavy investments to reach ultimate quality, already reached by the initiator of the Project, Olivier Jullien, with his illustrious Mas Jullien.
