Domaine Peyre Rose, one of the best estates in Languedoc.
After a career in real estate, Marlène Soria settled in the "middle of nowhere" in the early 1980s, on a whim.
The story of her unique estate, Peyre Rose, began in 1990 when she gained recognition from Robert Parker and La Revue du Vin de France. Since then, the estate has become a must-see in Languedoc.
Marlène Soria manages her vineyard using organic farming principles and produces four distinctive cuvées. Three reds: Belle Léone (formerly Syrah Léone), Les Cistes (formerly Clos des Cistes), Marlène n°3, and one white: Oro.
Her wines are unique in that they are only sold after many years of aging at the estate. It takes 10 years of patience before the new vintage is released. The 2014 vintage, for example, was released in March 2024!
The estate now covers nearly 25 hectares, mostly in red (23 ha: 70% syrah, followed by grenache noir, mourvèdre, and carignan) and 2 ha in white (50% rolle, 40% roussanne, and various other varieties including viognier).
Our selection of wines by Marlène Soria:
- Belle Léone (formerly Syrah Léone)
- Les Cistes (formerly Clos des Cistes)
- Marlène n°3
- Oro
Why buy wines from Domaine Peyre Rose?
Because we love them, and we believe these wines truly deserve a place in your cellar! But as some of our clients have said, "we are not objective, since we tasted them and chose them to sell: we are interested." That's why we prefer to "defend" our selection with comments from major guides, who are more objective than we are:
RVF Guide to the Best Wines of France 2025: 3★/4 (French excellence). At Marlène Soria’s, patience is key, with long, subtle aging processes that allow time to work its magic. The reds, full of energy and tension, need time to soften their vigor. They express a wonderful paradox, with delicate aromas and an abundance of muscle. As they mature, they can become truly great. The white Oro, the golden door of the estate, gets finer each year. A rarity, both for its unique profile and its tiny production volumes.
RVF Guide to the Best Wines of France 2021: 3★/3 (French vineyard excellence). Marlène Soria’s work is unique in Languedoc. Her wines are inseparable from the will and charisma of their creator. Mysterious, magical, sometimes inexplicable, they impose a rare stylistic unity and an extraordinary capacity to age, especially the whites, true anomalies for the region.
Bettane & Desseauve Guide 2023: 4★/5 (Very high quality). Les Cistes comes from the highest part of the estate, situated on very hard, stony soils. This cuvée has more acidity than Syrah Léone, which is grown on softer rocks that absorb water more easily: it’s often the most sensual cuvée. If we had to choose a synonym for Peyre Rose, it would certainly be "A thousand and one nights," given how enchanting the finishes are.
The Review of the Best Wines of France (March 2016) - The 50 cuvées that tell the story of Languedoc: Marlène Soria remains a unique case. She has no imitators, no epigones, and her singularity has opened minds and strengthened vocations. There is something heroic about the enterprise begun on the heights of Saint-Pargoire, in the wines, which go against current trends. Trying to imitate Marlène's style would be presumptuous. Among the three red cuvées produced today, Clos des Cistes stands out as the most consistent and often the finest.
Domaine selected in the Bettane & Desseauve 2016 Honor Roll (These estates impressed us with the quality of their production, their progress, their value for money, or a particularly successful wine). Domaine Peyre Rose: The wines invite a festival of flavors unmatched anywhere in Languedoc or beyond.
